Windows Update Cannot Check For Updates, Because The Service Is Not Ru

When I click on windows update a box appears with a red shield and when I click on that another box opens that says: "Windows Update Cannot Check For Updates, Because The Service Is Not Running. You may need to restart your computer."

I should point out that this happened after the following:
HDD failed, installed a new HDD - same spec and size.
I started the computer with the Windows7 Repair disk that I made up last year.
I reinstalled a system image that I saved 2 months ago.

Now I can't seem to update windows.
Is there a way to get a new windows 7 downloaded to my HDD I have my 25 digit code.

I would like to be able to use (ie- not loose) the data and programs that are in the system image.

    Thanks for your help

    Open Windows Update
    Click on Change Settings
    Select 'Never Update...'
    Click OK
    exit Windows Update
    Now open Windows update again
    Click on Change Settings
    Select 'Update automatically'
    Click OK
    exit Windows Update
Open Windows Update, and do a manual Check for Updates.

First, I recommend looking in Services.msc for these services:

    • Background Intelligent Transfer Service
    • Windows Update

Both should be set to Automatic and both should be running (they would say "Started").

Thanks (NoelDP), I did that but it didn't work.
It still has the same red shield only this time when I click on "check updates" the box saying "service not running" comes up.

Also now when I restart the computer the following comes up:
    Invalid system disk
Replace the disk and then press any key.

When I press enter windows starts

Should also tell you that I ran sfc /scannow
    the following result:
windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.
    Details are in C:\windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log

I tried to open that but it said I was not authorized....

Is there a way to overlay a new windows 7 download, I'm afraid that the system image saved 2 months ago was corrupt...

Background Intelligent Transfer Service needs to be set to Automatic. You should be able to start it right there too. Otherwise, reboot after changing it to Automatic.

Perhaps we should check further afield as well....
Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data.

    Also -
Please download the Farbar Service Scanner from

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-service-scanner/

Run it, and tick all the options, then click on the Scan button - copy and paste the report to your response.

    Details are in C:\windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log "

The result of SURT: screenshot attached

Please run an MGADiag report and post the results - it may show more detail
we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
    Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
