Hem... sorry for bumping, but... are there any news from MS fixing this? I got some issues too, hopefully, not as serious, but Firefox has artifacts when you scroll down text, and IE10 looks blurry... quite weird... In my desktop this happens, but not on my laptop...
If they fix this, that means I will need to uninstall KB2670838 or there will be an override for it?
I have it removed as well and also have IE 10 blocked from Installing. I had to remove IE 10 plus 5 updates that were for it. I was having all kinds of issues, my screen would go black for a few seconds and when it Blue Screened, I removed and blocked it. If you are interested HERE is the link to the instructions.
There's no need to disable WU completely - simply set it to check but not download/install. That way you get the notifications automatically and can pick and choose what you want to install.
If they release a new update then there'll be a new KB and everything that entails - If they simply update the current one, I doubt that there'll be a public notification as such, but the KB itself will be updated, and the normal channels will spread the news.
I'll be waiting then XD... what a mess with this lil' update... What I heard is that this has something to do with the way pixels are handled in this DX updates (something about greyscale onts instead of the way W7 normally handles Cleartype or something...) and that breaks even stuff on hybrid systems... or maybe I'm misinformed :)
I had this same problem on my desktop system, it drove me crazy for one day, but I cured it! It is a bug in the Catalyst satellite software vs the Platform Update. Uninstall Catalyst 13.10 completely, then reinstall it but use a Custom installation and choose NOT TO INSTALL any Media Foundation, App and Transcoding modules (especially if you don't need them anyway) - install only the driver and the basic Catalyst control software.
End result - you can still have the Platform Update and IE10 and the freshest AMD driver, and WMP again happily plays all the videos.
Please make sure to come back and provide feedback, I'm aching for someone to confirm that the solution I found is universal.
Teerex! Worked like a charm. Thank you for the tip :) I make use of my Macrium Reflect software quite often, heh. So I actually restored to an image without any catalysts installed to start with absolute clean slate. Installed IE10(I unhid the platform update, but I notice this time it didn't automatically install with IE10 like before, and it vanished from optional list after install of IE10 and did not appear in update history?) Anyway and then did FULL 13.10 catalyst install again just to verify problem. Still same problem. So I went back to clean image and did your custom install suggestion. I unchecked:
AMD APP SDK Runtime
AMD Accelerated Video Transcoder
AMD Drag and Drop Transcoder
AMD Media Foundation Transcoder
Now WMP plays avi files again.

It's my belief that the update is actually installed as one of the 'hidden' updates within the stub installer for IE10 - although it's also possible that MS have changed the detection to remove it from the listing if IE10 is already installed.
