Run the Norton Removal Tool to get rid if the dregs of that POS.

Download theNorton Removal Tool from here https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?lg=english&ct=united+states&docid=20080710133834EN&product=home&version=1&pvid=f-home

Close all otherprograms, then run the tool. When it's complete, reboot the machine whether it asks for it or not.

Afterthe reboot, open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command

    NETSH WINSOCK RESET

You'llbe advised to reboot - do so.

Okay. I did what you said above and the Symantec Vista Network Dispatch Driver tag has disappeared but the Security Processor Loader Driver reappeared and Avast! Network Shield still remains. Also I've noticed that avast! Free AV is still there. I could have sworn I uninstalled the whole program before.

Also, there was a pop up when I logged back in to the normal log in. It said " You cannot open a Click-to-Run app while you are repairing or removing a Click-to-Run application. Complete the existing action, and then try again." Then after that another pop up for Microsoft Office Starter 2010 Click-to-Run come out and ask if I wanted to download an update. I was afraid to download, so i didn't.

You have Office 2010 installed in Click-to-run mode?
I have to admit it's not something I've ever used, and know nothing about.
I'll se if anyone else here does know, and do some research and see what I can find.

I have noticed that a problem started post #1 before SP-1 was installed. Avast could of not been completely uninstalled or it would not be popping up. I noticed that two anti viruses were used at one time. Their is know way of knowing what problems two anti vireses fighting each other could of caused. With so many unknowns I would suggest a clean install and properly updated. Then using MSE.

Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Windows

Is the Office Starter 2010 a trial version? If it's time has expired it will not work again.

I don't think we're at the reinstall stage yet :) (thanks Bear, for forcing me to review the thread!)

Since Avast is seemingly in a semi-uninstalled state, it would be a good idea to run their removal tool to ensure that it's completely removed....

Download the Avastremoval utility from here http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility

Follow theinstructions for running it, and when complete, reboot the machine. and run the NETSH WINSOCK RESET command and reboot again

Alright. I have successfully removed Avast! from my computer and did what you told me. The only remaining entry that is tagged is the Security Processor Loader Driver. And the black screen is still there.

And as for the Office Starter, I think it was a trial version. I was installed on the laptop when I got it.

Hopefully, we won't need to do a clean reinstall.

I did a few digging in the forum and read that the Security Processor loader Driver had something to do graphics card. Should I follow that? Or do you have any other suggestion?
