Ughggh. Sorry. Me again. Back to getting the same message. I've stopped the service. It confirms as stopping.

    I'm running as an Administrator.

I put in this string at the C:\Users\Name> prompt: CD%windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform

I did this with the capitalization as above and also as all lower case. For some reason now I'm getting this report back
The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.

My machine recently updated itself last night. Have they now changed where this thing is and how its named ie do I now need a different string to rebuild the store? Can you suggest what the right syntax now is?
    Thanks so much!

You haven't entered the whole command that's why

Go back and start again, then copy / paste the whole chunk in one go:

    CD%windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform

    REN tokens.dat tokens.bar

    net start sppsvc

    slui.exe

Then press 'enter' and wait until you see a message telling you that the action completed.

    Best wishes

Hah! I'm an idiot.... I tried to paste with CTRL V - just realized the right click works in the command window. So now I can make this work - Thank you! Thats the good news.

Now the not so good news.

A little message pops up that says "this isn't genuine go online". So I go online.

A window spins up in my browser (chrome) saying Validating Windows - this may take a while don't navigate away from this page. It runs like that for 15 minutes. So then I fire up Internet Explorer and copy and paste (see I'm learning) the address in from the chrome window. Same message.

I didn't wait quite as long, but after a few minutes I thought - well F this for a game of soldiers.

Any ideas of how to better do this? Again its the Build 7601 message. And its the original machine I had this issue with. Maybe I should just bomb it to dust and just reformat and reinstall everything from the start - but trying to avoid that if I can.

    Thanks again.

The problem almost certainly lies in the permissions for the AppData folder in the NetworkServices profile.

    Let's check
Open an Elevated Command Prompt window, and run the following commands

    ICACLS C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData
    ICACLS C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\Networkservice
    ICACLS C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles
    ICACLS C:\Windows
    ICACLS C:\Windows\System32

    post the results

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
    1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
    2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
    3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

Well never mind - Windows just updated yet again. And now apparently I'm legal once more. I seem to slip in and out of favor faster than a Kardashian. I'm done with this though - this July 4th I'm going to just reinstall my Windows from the original disks and hopefully that will solve whatever gremlins are at the root of this thing. Thanks again for all the support as always. You guys are the best.

    Good luck with it.
