Update failed IE 10 Win 7 Ultimate 64

    Ran sfc
    Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]
Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

    D:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow
Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.
Beginning verification phase of system scan.
    Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

    Then I ran the SURT

Then I tried to install update:

Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems
    Download size: 86.3 MB
You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect.
    Update type: Important
Internet Explorer 10 is fast and fluid, and lets your websites shine and perform just like native apps on your PC....................

and got error code: 9C44 Windows Update encountered an unknown error
No more info in a screen shot.

Thanks in advance for your time and effort

Well the reason, or at least one of the reasons IE 10 will not install is because SP1 is not installed.
I downloaded windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe and it gives the attached image every time, --- you must reboot. I now recall I fiddled with this long ago and gave up.

So I guess installing SP1 is my real problem.

    Any help is appreciated.

I then went here http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/w...g-service-pack and did all three steps, no luck ;-(
Step 1 ends with just an Installation complete.
Step 2 says Online search for updates ran sucessfully, run WIn Update and check for updates, no SP! in
the list and no hidden updates.
Step 3 disable AVG, it was during all this nonsense

Most if not all the errors from the attempted install

Looking through the CBS logs, I get the impression that KB2584146 is not properly installed - every time the system attempts to evaluate it, it goes off into a loop, complaining
Failed to internally open package. [HRESULT = 0x800f0805 - CBS_E_INVALID_PACKAGE]

Please check the Installed Updates listing and see if it's installed.
If it is, then try uninstalling it.

Also - please check the SoftwareDistribution folder for references to KB2584146 and note what folder they are in.

    post your results

So I removed KB2584146 (interesting the MS page says it's for XP SP3 Download Security Update for Windows XP (KB2584146) from Official Microsoft Download Center)

Tried SP1 stand alone installer, and same failure message. see CBS_NO_KB2584146.zip

I installed KB2584146 using windows update -- worked fine --- or so it seems
See attached file SoftDistKB2584146.zip for files in Software Distribution dir relating to KB2584146 (just did a search on "SoftDistKB2584146")

Without reboot I tried SP1 stand alone installer, and same failure message. see CBS_WITH_KB2584146.zip

Reboot and I tried SP1 stand alone installer, and same failure message. see CBS_WITH_KB2584146_REBOOT.zip

    Thanks again for any help.
