When I installed 10 I went back to 8 updated and tried to install 10. Used Win update. It downloaded fine but the install progress bar stalled at 3/4 plus. I let it grind there for about twenty minutes and hit the shutdown. It started confguring and shut down as per usual. Fired it up hoping Coyote was not visiting again. All went well, it did the usual configuring and the desktop came up. I went for the browser and it was 10! Not a pretty install but it seems to have worked. Now that I have 10 I'm kind of wondering why I bothered? Guess I was bored ?

I have had that now and again. When the download is done and you normally would get a restart notice; the notice just isn't there. It appears like it's still downloading and installing but it actually waiting for a restart. You restart and things work.
I have no idea why this happens with Windows Updates at times.

    problem solved, the old-fashioned way...

I could not even find an entry in the update log to go back to IE8. I had two other updates failing, too. I finally decided to reinstall Windows. 200+ updates later, all successful, everything seems to be OK. There is even an up-side - I found a way to restore Win 7 on my Vaio without all the bloatware, so I now have a clean install.

Thank you, Tom, for your efforts, you spent a lot of time with my case.
