I can't say it is fair to blame Norton. Xfinity has its own suite called Constant Guard. When you install from their site the fist thing they have you download and install is CG. Once that is complete they give you a link to download and install Norton.
I had only installed the CG part when the failure manifested itself again. I just went through installation process again and installed Norton and then uninstalled CG and AutoCAD is rolling just fine.

richlars this is very interesting. I do have a question; does this Constant Guard keyboard things effect anything else you use on the computer?

I have Googled Constant Guard and it seems that just about everybody is having problems with it.
As far as I can tell AutoCAD was the only thing it was effecting. But this is a new build so I had not installed much else when I discovered the failure and then focused on that.

Why break something when you can do a proper job, and install Norton on it? :)

A number of US IPS's have taken to pushing their own 'security suites' on customers as 'free extras', From what I see from here in the UK, they almost all cause more problems than they prevent.

The ones in the UK have similar offerings - and similar problems.

I intensely dislike the idea of the 'Security suite' in the first place - it smacks of eggs and baskets. Once they start adding in things like 'registry optimizers' and 'system optimizers' which may or may not run automatically, they become positively dangerous.

I hate to admit it, but I had google MSE. I didn't even know that existed. It does a decent job does it?

Years back I hated Norton with a passion. Comcast was offering McAffee to its subscribers so I used that with no real issues. Then they switch to Norton and I about cried, but swallowed hard and have been pleasantly surprised.

It may not have the best detection rating of them all, but it causes less problems than any of them, and a low profile as well.
I automatically install it on any machine I deal with unless there's very good reason not to - and I don't get too many repeat customers for malware (apart from the dedicated p0rn-watchers - and they tend to click on anything!)
I use it myself, and although I may be more careful than many, I also probably deliberately go to more in the way of 'dodgy' sites than most, and MSE notifies me pretty well.
It updates anything up to 4 times a day, and I never notice it unless I forget to do a weekly scan, or it throws up a notification.
Simple, but effective, and good enough for 99% of the population - and free.

If I may. I learned a long time ago not to use programs offered by my ISP. The ISP's offer those programs not because you need them but because they get paid if you take them.
I also update my security several times a day manually.
Updating once a week or month really doesn't make any sense to me when the bad guys make infection by the hundreds or thousands every day. It doesn't take long for the updates because they are small because I do it so often.
I also use MSE and Windows built in Firewall with great success.
Another program I use that I think a lot of is
Malwarebytes Anti Malware Pro active. It also blocks and informs me of incoming and outgoing of question. It works well with MSE.

    Malwarebytes

Please note: I have never used any of the before mentioned security programs with a CAD program.

Just for a little laugh this morning.
My ISP offered me McAfee (McLaughee)

    (Muck-a-fee?)

One of my clients runs AutoCAD 2011 with MSE - no problem whatever. He also has MBAM installed for scanning only.
