Failed to install Windows updates (Win7 Home Basic)

    Thanks for your time.
First off, I must state that I am not trained in computers, but I have been using Windows PCs for many years now. This machine was purchased just a month ago and we have been trying to install Windows updates during this period. I could make out that some of the updates have been installed (eg., Bing desktop and many other important ones), but not all of them. Every time the process stops at about 15% of completion, and the system proceeds to shut down. During subsequent power up, configuration would also progress up to 15% and will be terminated with this display:

"Failed configuring updates, reverting changes" or similar message.

I have tried to gather all the information that was listed in this website (the update posting instructions I received after I registered here) Windows Update Posting Instructions except for one, item 3. Windows update error codes. However I tried, I could not gather this piece of information. If it is the correct thing to do, I can upload the screen shot showing the results of the command prompt scan and also the the zipped CBS file.
I will wait to hear from you.
    Thanks for your time
