Windows 7 Ult, updates won't run, Fixit crashes; error 0xc800247

Panasonic Toughbook laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate. MyComputer/Properties says Windows is activated and shows my correct activation code. Except for the update errors, everything seems to be running normally.

Three weeks ago I changed my 160 gb laptop hard drive with a 500gb WD drive. I had Ghost 15 disk images for partitions C: and D:. The restore worked fine and everything seemed normal. Then I started getting daily messages that windows was not activated or valid and I needed to install and run WindowsActivationUpdate.exe. Doing that gives me an error message from Windows Standalone Installer - 0xc800247. I downloaded and ran SURT. I got the same error message

This error code appears in numbers posts on many websites. Some "answers" say to update Intel hard drive drivers. Running Intel update software does not show my any recommended updates to disk drivers. My Computer says the driver for my hard drive is from Microsoft.

I have tried various other proposed fixes. None of them worked.

Running WindowsUpdate gets a message that "cannot check for updates because the service is not running." In Services, it says the Windows Update service is automatic and running. I've tried stopping and starting. Same errors. This problem has been widely reported.

MS support sent me to the Fixit site. Running the Fixit for Windows Update gets a Fixit crash. The tech had me run several other Fixits that didn't help. He said it was probably malware. But too many people are reporting this error with no one coming up with a malware cause.

    Running MGADiag.exe gets:

This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers -

Installing the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers
try downloading and installing them from here - http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2101&DwnldID=21730

    (you want the iata_enu.exe download)

Once complete, please reboot twice, then post another MGADiag report.

Thank you, NoelDP. I have seen this suggestion posted elsewhere. I hesitated because these are described as RAID drivers. I don't have a RAID array, just a single hard drive with two partitions.

    Also, the iata_enu.exe listing says:
    "Operating Systems:Windows Server 2003 *, Windows Vista *, Windows XP *"

    I have Windows 7.

Given those two potential questions, do you still recommend running Intel's iata_enu.exe?
    ------------------------------------------------------------
REVISION: After writing the above, I went back to the Intel website. In addition to the info above that seemed to disqualify my system, I found a readme.txt.
It gives much more info. It says the drivers do apply to Windows 7 and to a host of non-RAID controllers.
    These include my
    Intel(R) ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller

It also gives instructions for installation that cover pages and pages.
I hope it turns out to be simpler than that.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------

Also, I should clarify the warning I get each day. I had paraphrased it in the original post. It is: "Windows Activation Technologies. This computer is not running genuine Windows." This is followed by some instructions about resolving online by downloading the Windows Activation Update program. Running this program is where the
error 0xc800247 first appeared and still appears. At the bottom left of the warning window, greyed out, is 0x8004fe21.

The drivers DO apply to WIndows 7 click on the 'more' link. They DO apply also to AHCI systems with single drives - I have that set installed on this laptop (with a single drive installed), and had another set installed on my other laptop (with twin non-RAID drives) in Vista.

The error messages you are getting are typical of the problem.

    Install the drivers.

Thank you, Noel. I ran the Intel driver updates. After that, Windows Update worked and offered me 13 important and dozens of other updates. I went with the important ones for now. Looks like all is still well after a couple of reboots.

As you asked, the new MSADiag is below.

Did I say thank you? Ok, one more time: THANK YOU.
