Long time with black desktop on bootup; M$ updates 0% downloaded

Yeah it just seems my computer is being activated on every boot but this time it stopped to check for updates to download and took an extra long time before giving me my desktop because it checked for updates.

I tried to link back to the forum page after posting this but Chrome hung up. I hit Alt-Control-Delete to bring me the task manager screen, selected task manager, then I heard the User Login sound effect, saw task manager appear, then Chrome unstuck itself without any action within Task Manager.

Currently using 40% of my 8GB of RAM on bootup with this Chrome window open.

When I check the Shut Down button from the Start Menu it shows a yellow exclamation point meaning my Windows Updates are ready when I shut down.

It took a long time to bootup after installing the 8 updates. The black Windows startup screen said something like "Applying Update Configuration 16572..."; and then the light blue screen got stuck at "Configuring Windows Updates 45%" for several minutes; then it showed me the login screen as it jumped from 77% done to the Startup sound effect of the login screen.

I'm seriously afraid of any updates from M$. I should learn to backup my computer before patch Tuesday/Wednesday each month.
