Cloned disk results in msg "This copy of windows is not genuine"

    Hi,

I have a two-week old, custom built desktop with a genuine OEM version of Windows 7, operating Office 2010. The 'system' sits on an internal SSD and all my documents and files sit on a separate internal disk. One aspect of my backup and recovery strategy is to create a clone of both disks using Norton Ghost 15. These clone disks sit in one drawer each of my PC and can be easily removed and stored for emergency purposes. The idea is that if my PC is ever stolen etc., I have duplicate disks that I can use in a to-be-purchased PC, which will allow me to get back on board quickly. I have been using this strategy for years with my prior computer running XP (only one internal disk) and this all worked beautifully. However, this strategy has appeared not to work with the new computer and has caused a problem as follows.

I first created a clone of the SSD and that completed without any errors. The next day, I tried to repeat this and I received a message 'Can't clone while Windows is running.' I realised from this and a bit of exploration that Windows had booted off the clone, rather than the SSD. In the process, the drive letters were swapped, but as the drives are different sizes, it was clear which was which. The guy who built the PC said that this happened because he had not stipulated a disk booting priority in the bios. Be that as it may, when I now try to start the computer with only the SSD in place, the computer goes through a bit of a process regarding my 'personal settings' and ends up displaying a blue screen with the message in the bottom right-hand corner:

    Windows 7
    Build 7601
This copy of windows is not genuine.

At this point I can't do anything. If I turn off the computer, insert the clone copy of the SSD into one of the desktop's drawers (so that both the SSD and the clone are connected to the motherboard) I can then start the computer. However, I want the SSD to be the one that boots and the clone to sit off somewhere safe and sound for an emergency.

First I need to get the SSD working again. Any thoughts on how to get the copy of Windows 7 on the SSD recognised as genuine?

Next, I need to sort out the boot priority and then see if a clone of the SSD will boot up if asked to (not automatically). My worry is that the clone will then show the message that its copy of Windows 7 is not genuine. Is this likely? If so, is there some way to overcome this? If not, then my recovery strategy is not viable and I'll need to do something else. It is not the only thing I do in case of an emergency, but I'm super cautious and like the option this aspect offers.

I hope all this detail is okay. I'm not that computer savvy and don't know what detail will help and what detail is superfluous.

    Thanks in anticipation, Ann

I dont see an obvious problem with the MGADIAG report....was the report generated when you booted from the SSD that displays the non-genuine notification?

    Hi Golden,
Thanks for your reply. This diagnostic is from booting with the clone. The SSD won't boot, so not sure how to get diagnostics for it. Is there a way of getting diagnostics following the blue screen with the '...not genuine...' message?
    Cheers,
    Ann

When you boot from the SSD you get a blue screen with the non-genuine notification. This means that it has booted to Windows.....just run the MGADIAG report as normal once you have booted.
