Windows Updates error 80004002, tried multiple solutions

    Hello members,

This is my first post on SevenForums. I'm posting here because I found a similar thread but with a rather harsh solution, doing a repair install. Before I'm doomed to do the same I was hoping someone would like to take a look at my problem, solutions I tried and attached logs. And maybe give me some advise.

    Problem
Since a few days Windows update suggests to install the same updates over and over. After installing the updates it offered the same updates again and again. I could see that the updates were installed in the update history overview. However as soon as I clicked on "look for updates" it gives me the error code: 80004002.

After trying all the solutions below I tried a system restore yesterday. I restored my system to the oldest possible restore point (June 28th, 2013) without success however. At this point it won't even offer me the 2 updates it did before. Moreover in the update history overview no updates are shown at all. When I try to look for updates I still get the error code 80004002.

    Solutions tried
I tried all the solutions below that I found on the internet of Microsoft knowledge base. I tried these solution under several circumstances, under normal Windows startup, under diagnostic clean startup using msconfig.exe and under safe mode. None of them with success.

Sorry if all linked sites are in dutch, couldn't find them in English.

    Restore Windows update
Tried to restore Windows update using this site and applying WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab

    Reinstalled Windows update client
Tried to reinstall Windows update client using this site and applying windowsupdateagent30-x64.exe
It gives an error when trying to install. Translated from Dutch to English (see attached jpg):

Unrecoverable error occurred in Windows Update Agent-installationprogram

    Microsoft Fit-It
Tried Microsoft Fix-It using this site and applied Fix-It program. It seems you can choose aggressive mode but I don't see that option. I can only choose between default repair (program decides what to repair) and custom repair (user decides what to repair). I used both options without success.

    Microsoft System Update Readiness
I used the Microsoft System Update Readiness from this site but without success. I attached the CBS.log files.

    Microsoft Answers Manual Method
On the community side Microsoft Answers I found a thread with a manual repair method that I tried. Not all suggested operations that needed to be performed worked. Many dll's gave an error when trying to register them manually (see attached jpg for an example).

I'm sorry the thread is in Dutch again but probably you can see how the repair process is supposed to look like.

Unable to install update manual method
I tried the solution explained at this Microsoft site but it's more related to being unable to install updates. Not all steps of the suggested methods worked without getting an error.

    Virus and Malware scanning
I used AVG Free Edition to scan for viruses (found nothing). I used Malware Bytes and Windows Defender to scan for spy / malware. See attached Maleware Bytes log.

CHKDSK and SFC will follow after scanning for viruses and maleware.

It looks to me as if your SoftwareDistribution folder is corrupted.

    Open an Elevated Command Prompt
    Run the following commands

    NET STOP WUAUSERV
    REN C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution SDOLD
    NET START WUAUSERV

    wait 15 minutes, and reboot
then wait 10 minutes, and open Windows Updates, and run a Check for Updates.

Install only the oldest update found - and reboot once installed
then go back to Windows updates and install the others.

Thanks for your reply and looking into my log files.

I tried your suggestion but without success. I'm still getting the same error.

I checked if a new SoftwareDistribution folder (size = 13,8 MB) was made and if there was a SoftwareDistribution.old folder (size = 7,86 MB). Both folders were present but had different sizes.

Do you have any other suggestions for a solution?

OK - please post the new CBS.log file and we'll see if the errors have changed.

There's no obvious errors in the CBS.log - and the offline SFC you ran appears to have been OK.
What happens if you run SFC /SCANNOW from within a normal Windows boot?

    Please open Event Viewer
In the left pane, navigate to the Windows Logs
right-click on Applications and select 'Save all events as...' save as Apps.evtx
repeat for the System logs - save as Sys.evtx
Compress both files, and attach to your reply.

Also please attach your WindowsUpdate.log file to your reply.

First of all I appreciate your help very much!!!!

I've attached the requested files. When I look in the application and system logs I see a few Windows update errors. Unfortunately I have no idea what it means. I hope you can help me out on this.

I also attached the LocaleMetaData files because those got saved together with the apps.log and sys.log files. I thought maybe you need these files in order to read the log files. I think I also saved the log files with support of the English language.

When I run SFC /SCANNOW in an elevated command prompt after a normal reboot I get the message (translated to English): "Recovery service cannot be started".

FYI I'm pretty sure that I'm the administrator since that is the only account on my computer. Please see the result in the attached screenshot when I type "net user" in command prompt.

This appears to be the critical error...
    Code:

I *think* this is a registry problem - but I would have expected CheckSUR to have highlighted it, if so.

I have to admit at this point that I don't consider myself fully competent in this area.

I'm going to call for help - otherwise your best bet is going to be to see if MS offers support for Windows Update for free in your locale.

I'm sorry but I don't understand what you mean. Are you willing to call MS for help or do you expect me to call them. Could you please elaborate on that? It would be awesome if you would like to call since I'm in no way an expert in this.

In which attached file did you find the error message?
