Auth returns invalid key on Vista OEM -> 7 clean update

    Hi there.

PC is Dell box and came with Vista Home Basic OEM. Hard drive has died and so I've replaced it. I don't have installation media for Vista. I've purchased 7 update (English_Windows_7_Professional_SP1_W64_X17-59186.img) from my work to use instead. They are a UK University and have a deal with Microsoft for cheaper licenses for staff.

Install went fine but refuses to activate. Get "invalid key". I've contacted Microsoft by phone but the rather unhelpful lady told me the _only_ way was to reinstall Vista and then upgrade to 7. I thought someone may be able to help here as a) I don't have the media for Vista and b) I'd prefer a fresh install anyway.

I remember that doing a second install with the retail upgrade will work.

    Unfortunately no dice.

Upgrade goes through successfully but after letting it all load up back to desktop and attempting activation it fails with the same message.

Product key that is on the MGADiag report is the Default Key Windows uses if you don't input a Product key during installation .

Right click on Computer inside the start menu select Properties . Scroll to the bottom click on Change Product Key and type in the Product key that came with your Windows 7 installation disc .

Yeah; double, triple and quadruple checked them

Is there any merit in the Microsoft lady's suggestion of installing Vista first? I don't see how it could make any difference but then again, I don't fully get their authentication madness...

The above tutorial link I gave you has worked for thousands of upgrade installs since win7 was first released. Did the University give you the key code or email it to you ?

Message is the same whether I click on "Change Product Key" or the activation link directly above it. Screenshot:Attachment 278337
