Changing product/serial number on Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

    Hi all,

New here, I hope that this is the right place for this.

I bought a machine a short while ago and it has come up with a popup saying that 'You may be a victim of software couterfeiting' and also on the bottom right corner I have the Windows 7 build 7601 'This copy of Windows is not genuine'.

I've gone back to the seller who is not interested (I'll deal with this separately!).

The purpose of my post is that I want to make my copy legit and have been looking on eBay and there are Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit CD's with COA.

Will I have to reinstall the whole operating system or can I follow some of the guides on here and just change my product key from the one that I buy with the CD?

I really want to avoid formatting and reinstalling as I have just got the machine set up as I want it and it will take considerable time to get it back to how it is now.

Thanks in advance for any advice/tips!

    Welcome to the Seven Forums

Do not buy a new DVD and license off of eBay you will end up back in the same situation where it will not be genuine.

You should contact Microsoft and turn in seller, sometimes in the past they have given a person that does that a free copy of Windows 7.

    Hi, thanks.

I guess that was my plan B! I was kind of hoping to avoid the full cost of Microsofts OS by getting what looked like an us-used copy on eBay. The seller does have good feedback, specifically for the same products...

    Thanks for your feedback.
