Can't activate windows after change of hardware

So about a week ago I bought a new CPU & mobo because my other ones died, and after I put the new parts in I have to activate windows again. I was given 2 options: ring a microsoft number and give them a long code over the phone or enter my product key i was given when I bought windows a few years ago. Putting in my product key doesn't work, and it prompts me to buy another (nope). I have just rung the number and given them my code and i got told i either need to buy a new product key or ring customer service and see if they can sort it out. Thought i'd try here first. My mgadiag is below.

    Cheers, Jesse.

Yeah an OEM copy is tied to your original hardware configuration. I'd have thought MS would have helped you out with a new product key under the cirumstances. I'm not sure whether this would help but take a look anyway; Clean Install Factory OEM - Windows 7.

In principle you will need a new license since you changed the mobo. You can try to call MS and tell them a sad story on how this all happened. Sometimes they will reactivate the OEM key - but no guarentee.

    Code:
Windows License Type: OEM System Builder
    Notification Reason: 0xC004F00F
The Software Licensing Service reported that the hardware ID binding is beyond level of tolerance.
Cause : This issue may occur if the computer hardware has changed or if the drivers that are installed on the computer have been updated.

I recommend contacting Microsoft by phone and explaining that your motherboard died:
    1. In Windows, click Start
    2. In the Search box type: slui.exe 4
    3. Press Enter on your keyboard
    4. Select your Country
    5. Select the Phone Activation option, then call the number given and hold for a real person.

    Activate Windows 7 by Phone
