None that I know of. I've only come accross "KMS" when I checked MGADIAG report. Never heard of KMS before. This is a standalone machine connected to the internet through an external router. It's not networked. It's usually disconnected.

Thanks VistaKing. Is there any danger of this issue locking me out? This machine is nearly always offline, and the activation issue only manifests when it's offline.

The timing of this issue makes me think it me the Firewire card I added. Never got the genuine copy warning before installing that PCI card.

Usually the OEM System Builder keys could only be installed once without having to call Microsoft . They're hardware orientated . Retail versions could have numerous installation attempts .

If I called MS now and spoke to customer support, could they resolve this issue so I wouldn't have to reinstall? Since this machine is used for music production, it's also been heavily tweaked by turning off some features and services. Not sure if that has any bearing on this problem.

I bought the OEM version because that's what the store had in stock of Pro x64 flavour at the time. If I recall correctly, the difference in price between the OEM and retail wasn't that significant when they had the retail ones in stock. So much headache for a few dollars.

If you run slui 4 in command prompt and follow the instructions it will give you an 800 number and see if you could speak to a live person instead of a machine .

I am about to call MS. But one question though. Why would enabling/disabling network adapter affect the activation status? Turns out that the activation status is ok as long as I enable the network adapter, even if I disconnect the PC form the router. So my PC is not actually communicating with a server to validate my activation every time I reboot. It just needs the network adapter enabled for activation status to work.

Also ruled out the Firewire card as the culprit although it did prompt the first not genuine warning. I uninstalled the card and then physically removed it from mobo to test this.

I was scouring the forums trying to find a connection between network adapter and activation status before calling MS. No luck yet.
