    Windows 7 - build 7601 - This copy of Windows is not genuine


    Good afternoon

    Starting two days ago I started having having this message in the corner of my desktop after (seemingly) my antivirus tried to update and failed (Comodo AV). However, the desktop background doesn't go black when this happened and the error on the corner disappeared after a reboot only to reappear after trying to update Windows (which failed after telling me my copy of windows wasn't genuine).

    Re-installed my anti-virus and rebooted, full system scan for virus and malware (Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware) and nothing showed up but the message reappeared in the corner after another failed Windows update. I probably should mention that this is the Windows copy that came with my laptop.

    So I joined the forums to try and fix this, download the MGADiag Tool and it says it can't create output files after doing the diagnosis (hr = 0x800706b5), sooooo I'm at a bit of a loss :)

    Can anyone help me out here? :)

    The MGADIAG error message can be ignored - simple run it again, click copy (ignore any errors), then use CTRL+V to paste the MGADIAG output here in your next reply.

    Said the update was already installed. Rebooted and like previously the message is not there.

    It looks to me like you may have a couple of problems :)
    Let's start by trying this...




    This can result from mistakenly setting the System32 folder and its contents to 'Read Only' status.

    Open Windows Explorer (Computer)
    Navigate to the C:\Windows folder
    Find the System32 sub-folder and right-click on it
    select Properties

    Clear the 'blob' from the 'Read-only (Only applies to files in folder)' box by clicking on it until it's plain white.
    Click on Apply.

    Make sure that the radio button for 'Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files' is set, and click OK.

    Accept the Administrator prompt. After a couple of seconds, you'll be told there is an error - click on the 'Ignore all' button.

    Wait for it to finish - it could take a couple of minutes.

    OK out, and exit Windows Explorer.

    Reboot twice

    Post a new MGADiag report.

    Indeed, that folder was set to read-only. No idea how that happened, I'm not in the habit of fiddling with Windows folders.

    OK - that's got at least part of the problem sorted :)
    The rest may be due to a similar problem....
    Open Windows Explorer (Computer)
    Navigate to the C:\Windows folder
    Find the SoftwareDistribution sub-folder and right-click on it
    select Properties

    Clear the 'blob' from the 'Read-only (Only applies to files in folder)' box by clicking on it until it's plain white.
    Click on Apply.

    Make sure that the radio button for 'Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files' is set, and click OK.

    Accept the Administrator prompt. After a couple of seconds, you'll be told there is an error - click on the 'Ignore all' button.

    Wait for it to finish - it could take a couple of minutes.

    OK out, and exit Windows Explorer.

    Reboot twice

    Post a new MGADiag report.

    Well, I've certainly rebooted my laptop more often these past 3 days then I have in the rest of the month :)

    This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers -

    Installing the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers
    try downloading and installing them from here - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2101&DwnldID=22194

    (you want the iata_enu.exe download)

    Once complete, please reboot twice, then post another MGADiag report.
