Almost complete hang after login, only on SP1

My new machine came with Win8. Hated it. Downgraded back to 7 successfully. Started doing all the updates. Kept working great. Now, after service pack 1, immediately after logging in, the system hangs slightly. I can do a few things, try to launch programs, whatever. A giveaway to when it's ready to use is that my network status indicator changes from the circle around the signal strength to the normal "connected" symbol. Until then, I can't do much. It's incredibly frustrating, and it can take up to 5 minutes for it to work normally again. No errors, BSOD's, or anything of the like. Any ideas? I'm technologically capable enough to answer any questions you've got. I just don't know Win 7 for shit. Typically an old XP/*Nix user.

I removed SP1 and it works great again. I removed ONLY SP1.

The update installs successfully with no errors of any type. What sort of information are you looking for? Those directions seem to tell me about running some software but not what to post.

EDIT: Never mind. It does. Just tiny at the bottom.

Second EDIT: I'm also not having any installation problems, so I shall see what that procedure puts up.

Yet another note: I have removed SP1 since then, due to it being so damned slow.

I have tried repeatedly to upload it using the built-in uploader. It is not working (HTTP 500 error). I also fell asleep (GMT -6). You can find the ZIP file with the CBS folder in it at http://www.wavemadison.net/CBS.zip ... I have no errors from Windows Update and I ran and installed that first large update package/file.

    Hi BotenRedWolf,

SFC detected a corrupt file which is responsible for something called Network Policy Server (NPS), which means sweet FA to me, but from what you described, it sounds like it might have something to do with your problem :)

    SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

    1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
    2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
    3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
    4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
    5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
    6. SFCFix will now process the script.
    7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.

    Hi BotenRedWolf,

I have fixed the script so can you repeat those instructions again please? Then run another SFC scan afterwards:

    SFC Scan

    1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
    2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
    3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

      sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

      copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

    4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

That's what I got after running the script again. SFC now does not want to work, citing another application or service is running. I shall reboot and try again and get those results to you then.

Excellent! The repair looks to be successful, but the SFC results will be able to confirm it. TrustedInstaller, the service behind SFC, is quite often "busy" so it may well be doing something else - a reboot should sort it out though.
