WTH has any install to do with a tampered service, Greg?

This is deliberate action - either on the part of the user, or malware.

The install is of an Acer Upgrade kit of which I have two and have helped others here over the years since Acer support is useless for them. I was proceeeding as though that were the case since he asked for our help after MS had apparently tried to help him and even supplied a new key.

What I haven't gotten clear is if he found and used the key which should have been on the sleeve of the Upgrade Kit Installation disk.

May I ask the nature of the tampering, and whether it appears to be an activation exploit to you?

gregrocker - I used the slui.exe to get a registration prompt then used the original (not pirate) Acer upgrade code on the Win 7 DVD that was provided to me by Microsoft. That seemed to fix everything. I didn't actually reinstall anything.

NoelDP - what do you mean by tampered service? I haven't fiddled with anything myself, I simply don't have those skills. Everything seems to be working okay now and I'd prefer not to mess with it any more unless there is a specific risk. If you could let me know on that point it would be helpful. Thanks.

    Code:
    HealthStatus Bitmask Output:
     Tampered Service: sppsvc
(back on my laptop now, rather than the phone, so here's the full version of the test I asked for....

Please open anElevated (Administrator) Command Prompt window and use the followingcommands....

    net start sppsvc

    sc qc sppsvc

    sc queryex sppsvc

    sc qprivs sppsvc

    sc qsidtype sppsvc

    sc sdshow sppsvc

Copy and pastethe output to your reply

Here are some instructions to make lifeeasier :)

    1) To open anElevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs,Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run asAdministrator. Accept the UAC prompt.

    2) To run thecommands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on thehighlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at topleft – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the lastcommand, so hit the Enter Key once.

    3) To copy theresults... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit...'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to pasteit into your response.

Hi NoelDP, just wondering what the problem is please - basically is there any risk? If not I'd prefer not to mess around as my skills in this are very minimal. Plus if I do a major mess up there is no English-savvy IT service to help anywhere within a long distance.

The above are merely diagnostic tests to see if we can find out what the Tamper actually is - it may be as simple as the service being set to 'Auto' rather than 'Auto-Delayed', or it may be more complex.
The results should give us an idea of what's amiss and how to fix it.

Thanks, but as it stands now I'd rather not mess around with it anymore.

It WILL show a non-genuine again sooner or later - and it's best dealt with earlier rather than after some time.

nic, I would work the Noel to get this resolved as he knows activation best..

For best performance you'd want to have an important system setting correct anyway.

Have you considered doing a Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7
which will assure you have the best install of all, since you're here for us to help you?

There was a clean install done in July by the shop gregrocker. I only asked them to tweak and check the unit but they did a clean install instead. Hence I've only just spent quite awhile getting everything back into shape and I'm not really keen to do it all again.

I really do appreciate the help.
