    For SFC:

    1. Click Start
    2. In the search box, type cmd
    3. In the list that appears, right-click on cmd.exe and choose Run as administrator
    4. In the command window that opens, type sfc /scannow and hit enter.

Report the output from the command window once it finishes.

Interesting one, that! - SFC itself is compromised

I'll post a fix for it in a few minutes

...and I just realised why that patch gave the error it did - I sent you for the 64-bit version rather than the 32-bit one
Download Security Update for Windows 7 (KB2864202) from Official Microsoft Download Center
should be the right one - sorry about that!

I think I'd rather wait a few minutes until I've checked the CheckSUR results and got the SFC file problem sorted - just download it ready for the moment :)

    The CheckSUR is clear.

    I've uploaded a file - mpkad.zip - to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive
    Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print theseinstructions!)
Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, starttapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of whichshould be the option 'Repair my Computer'
    Pick that
You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
    At the prompt type
    DIR C:\mpkad
hit the enter key - if you get a 'NotFound' error try
    DIR D:\mpkad
    or
    DIR E:\mpkad

The drive letter in use when you find the folder willneed to be substituted (for<drive>) into the followingcommand...

    XCOPY<drive>:\mpkad <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

    (e.g.XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h )

run the command (it should take almost no time)andwhen the prompt returns, type
    EXIT
and hit the Enter key to exit CommandPrompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in anElevated Command Prompt
then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your reply

When I press F8 after rebooting I get the options to boot into Windows 7 with varying degrees of control such as Pointer, Debug - default mode, Debug - Legacy mode, No SLIC - Pointer, No SLIC and Loader Help.

    am I missing something?

Ignore errors produced when clicking on theCopy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup filesfor some reason. The data is still copied to the clipboard for pasting to yourresponse.

Please also statethe Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one)on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOTquote the Key on the sticker!
