    I just realised....
    You are running the Beta RC version of Windows 7 - which should have time-bombed years ago.
    The fact that it's still running at all means that you have some kind of hack in place, and the installation must be classed as counterfeit.

    You need to reformat and reinstall using genuine media and Key.

    Ok. Have actually bought 3 laptops in last 4 years, each with windows 7. This latest copy I didn't bother replacing as laptop was 2nd hand.

    I'm on the verge of buying new Lenovo so presume I'll get windows 8 with it. Dread the reinstallations and file moving, it's always such a hassle.

    Thank you for your time - I'm sorry about that. I don't have any windows genuine advantage problems so presumed everything was kosia.

    Lenovo are still selling machines with Windows 7 installed - but badged for Windows 8 as the prime OS - so long as you don't mind paying for the Pro edition.
    Get one while the getting is good :)
