Windows 7 will not Update

I am running windows 7 home premium. Windows update says the service is not running, please restart. I have restarted and the problem has not worked for a long time. I have checked sevices to see if it is stopped. The windows update service doesent even show up.... Is there a way the files could have been deleted? if so how do i recover them? any help would be greatly apreciated!

Hello sonny and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might have damaged or corrupt system files that are preventing Windows Updates from working correctly. Try running a System File Checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two.) If problems are found, run the scan at least three times and reboot your computer immediately following each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

You could also try the suggestions in the blue "note" box under Option Two, Step 4, starting with the System Update Readiness Tool. If you get to the point of manually replacing files that SFC could not fix, I've found it's faster and easier to go straight to a Repair Install.
