    Windows Update error 8007370B...

    Hi there,

Found a faulty RAM chip in my machine which was replaced. The machine, as far as I can tell, is working fine apart from the fact that I cannot use Windows update.

I've been playing with SURT and other suggestions on this fine forum but still cannot get past it.

When I try SFC / Scannow (as according to the 'Windows Update Posting Instructions'), I get:

Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation

I've tried a repair install and that failed too...

I wondered if someone would be kind enough to look over my log files to see if the system can be salvaged.

I've attached the CBS.log zip files

    Kindest Regards,

    Lee

it looks to me like something possibly corrupted some files somewhere and it somehow created a domino effect. If the repair installs like that; as much as i hate to say it; it sounds like you might have to first make sure all your important files etc. are backed up; then using the windows disc(assuming you still have the disc) do a re install of windows. That i do believe should fix these problems. It sounds like something corrupted some of the system files to the point that its preventing certain functions and commands from being executed. OR You might be able to extract the files that are having issues off the windows disc and copy the good versions of those files back to the proper locations. unfortunately i dont recall exactly how to do that part when it comes to extracting just one or more files from the windows disc. But im sure you can find it somewhere on here. As for the windows update; I would search for the windows update folder and delete the folder entirely which should allow windows update to hopefully refresh and re install the needed files for updating.

    You have registry corruption.

I need to have a look at your COMPONENTS registry hive

Please copy the C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS file (no extension) to your desktop and then compress it - upload the compressed file to your favoured fileshare site (preferably Dropbox or SkyDrive) and post a link.

    Hi Noel,

    You're spot on.

Yesterday I loaded the Component hive and found the strange entries listed in the SURT logs.

Once I'd double checked them against a working windows setup, I deleted them from the registry and the updates started to flow and I was able to successfully run an SFC.

Thanks for the help and advice - we can put this one to bed.

You need to isolate the cause - often it's failing RAM or problems with the hard drive systems
