OMG!! That one never even occurred to me!
Thanks for the (obvious, in hindsight) solution, Tom.
I'll post the usual fix, then and cross fingers :)

    I've uploaded a file - mh1aa.zip - to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive
    Please download and save it.
Right-click on the downloaded file, and select Extract all…
Extract to the default location - which will create a new folder mh1aa in the same place.
Open this folder - there should be one folder inside it (Packages)

Copy the content of the Packages folder to the folder
    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages

Now run the CheckSUR tool again (it may take a while)

Post the new CheckSUR.log file, and the CheckSUR.persist.log file.

Thanks for the file, and sorry for the delay. I was not informed by email of your update. I followed your instructions, and I have attached the files you requested.

Hmmm - that didn't work, for some reason.
    ...
Dammit - my fault. I posted the amd64 versions, rather than the x86 ones!

I'll post the proper ones asap.

Phew! got it that time :)
The CheckSUR is now clear - you can try installing IE again now.
