Hmm - not as good as I would have liked

    Perhaps this will help....

Open an Elevated Command Prompt window, and run the following command...

    REGSVR32 WINTRUST.DLL /s

    close the window, and reboot.

then post a new MGADiag report.

I don't know if this means anything, but the windows update history is still there...

(PS, this was after running the command you wanted and a restart)

    Still no change...

Please download and save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
(you'll need to look in the details for Windows 7, downloading from the Microsoft Download Center)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your reply

It went quickly and installed a hotfix. I went ahead and attached the files - they are only less than 1k each each. Hope that's ok. If not, let me know and I will zip them/link.

One thing that has happened since all this started is that all my folders under "all programs" in the start menu are empty. If I actually open them up in Windows Explorer, the shortcuts are there, but the start menu doesn't show them...

    *sigh*

CheckSUR is clear - Please open Windows Update, and attempt a manual Check For Updates...
what happens? (this may tell us a bit more)

Once the updates are listed please don't install them yet -
    post the c:\windows\windowsupdate.log file

then try installing ONLY the oldest update available - what error message do you get? (which is it)?

If it fails, please follow this procedure....

you will lose your Update history (but the updates will still be installed, and viewable in the Installed Updates listing).

    Open an Elevated Command Prompt
    Run the following commands

    NET STOP WUAUSERV
    REN C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution SDOLD
    NET START WUAUSERV

    wait 15 minutes, and reboot
then wait 10 minutes, and open Windows Updates, and run a Check for Updates.

Install only the oldest update found - and reboot once installed (hopefully!)
then go back to Windows updates and install the others.

If that doesn't work then I'm out of ideas, and we'll really have to hunt-and-peck a solution, or do a repair install.

    If only...

PS - did you see my comment about everything missing on the start menu? If it's stored in C:\Users\Cindi\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu it shows, but if it's stored in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu, the folder shows as empty (even though the actual shortcuts are there if you look in ProgramData). This is a brand new user account (since getting the PC).

    Anyways...

I accidentally did not save the .log before I did the steps you outlined. The attached .log is from after everything was completed. The oldest update I could find was KB971033 - it failed. I've attached a screenshot with the error.

Also - I've uploaded a screenshot of my settings for windowsupdate. I don't know if it matters or not.

KB971033 is one of the simplest updates in existence - and should install easily.
The FFFF error is as generic as they come.

As far as I can tell, there's no reason why it shouldn't install, at least as far as the CBS/SFC and CheckSUR results are concerned.

Since KB971033 is the WAT update, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
    Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
