Windows 7 Genuine Issue (includes diagnostic info)

I've recently "inherited" a laptop from my father, who on a whim decided that the 17" screen (which was essential in the previous purchase) was now too big and he needed something compact to travel. Only problem is that he is dedicated to the cause of causing computer problems, and now I've got this Genuine Error popping up. I purchased the computer (online) for him with Windows, and it has a Windows sticker on the bottom - it is a genuine copy.

There are no recovery disks of any kind (who knows where they have been lost to) available.

    Here is the data:

I've tried deleting the update KB971033, but I'd really like to actually address the issue's cause.

Thanks all - and I hope this post meets all the requirements!

This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers -

Installing the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers
try downloading and installing them from here - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2101&DwnldID=22194

    (you want the iata_enu.exe download)

Once complete, please reboot twice, then post another MGADiag report.

I downloaded the file, and received a warning that the computer currently contains driver versions newer than those I am about to install. (Screenshot attached) Shall I still install them?

OK - that makes sense, given the date of your BIOS...

Try this set of drivers, instead...

Ok - downloaded, installed, and restarted twice. The first restart took (what seemed like) forever, "configuring updates" before it shut down. The second one installed 4 windows updates. (I didn't run windows update or anything, so not sure where all that came from).

    Here's the new info:

That seems to have cleared a backlog - the WAT Update KB971033 has uninstalled finally (it was showing as still installed previously)
Please attempt to reinstall the update from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971033
    Reboot

run another MGADiag report, and post it.

I'm trying, but I keep getting an error while trying to install it. I've tried through Firefox and MSIE. Screenshot attached. I am trying now through Windows Update - apparently there are 68 "Important" updates, all of which are marked as failed in the history, the most recent attempt being this morning. Could there be something larger happening?

Edit: Tried through Windows Update (both by itself and with the other updates). Still got an error. Can't install any updates it seems... I tried running the Microsoft "FixIt" Tool, restarting, and trying again - no good.

I expected that - it's common with this type of error. I'm just surprised that the uninstall managed to complete.

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

    CHKDSK C: /R

    and hit the Enter key.
You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, press Enter, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -
    then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

    SFC /SCANNOW

    and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive Public folder (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.

Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

Strange that your screenshot shows that SFC had problems - there are none evident in the log, and it completed normally, as far as I can see.
There are no obvious background problems either.

Please run the following commands in an Elevated Command Prompt

    NET STOP CRYPTSVC
    REN C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CATROOT2 CATROOT2OLD
    NET START CRYPTSVC

once complete, leave the system alone for at least an hour to rebuild the database, then reboot, and run another MGADiag report and post the results.

Note that this may delete your Update History - but all updates will remain installed, and can be viewed in the Installed Updates listing.
