Windows 7 Update/Repair error 0x80070246, missing manifests+mum files
Trying to repair a Windows 7 64bit Dell Laptop. Owner had bad RAM running back from February causing multiple BSOD and unstable behavior - but they kept using it. Got new RAM, it now tests rock solid with both ms ram tests and memtest. No more BSOD.
Now trying to repair corrupted files. Tried to install SP1 through Windows updates, got errors. Tried Standalone download. Fails with "An illegal character was encountered."
Tried several MS "fixits" to repair SP1 install failures - now windows updates fail entirely with 0x80070246. Tried sfc/scannow. Fails to complete.
Tried SURT. Completes successfully, but does not fix underlying problem.
Tried as a next-to-last resort a repair install. Fails after copying files, tells me to restart windows and retry setup, with "download all updates" checked. Have tried both with and without updates. No luck.
Google got me as far as reading the CHECKSUR and CBS logs, which show a handful of missing manifests and mum/cat files. Couldn't find another windows-7-lacking-sp1 pc to copy the missing files from (I assume SP1 changes the manifest file sets? Couldn't find the files on any of the win7 sp1 systems, anyway)
Google then led me to this forum, showing posts where others with similar missing files were able to post logs and get back a zip file of the missing manifests & etc. I am hoping that someone will be as kind to me. Attached are the cbs.log, checksur.log, checksur.persist.log, and the setupact.log from the failed repair install. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
