    Windows 7 update errors

I noticed this morning that windows updater had failed after trying to install updates last night (after looking at the update history it has been failing to install updates for months but I never noticed), I have run the system updates readyness tool and the sfc scan both of them showed no problems. The errors that the updater is showing aren't recognised by the troubleshooting tool so I thought I would ask here for help

    Error codes:

    8E5E0147

    - which I would have expected CheckSUR to also find

Perhaps a look at the COMPONENTS hive would help?

I need to have a look at your COMPONENTS registry hive

Please copy the C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS file (no extension) to your desktop and then compress it - upload the compressed file to your favoured fileshare site (preferably Dropbox or SkyDrive) and post a link.

is there a certain thing i need to do to be able to copy the components file you need? Every time i try to copy it to my desktop to compress it i get a warning saying "cannot complete action, file in use by system"

That means that the hive is still loaded (and is itself a bad sign, as Windows doesn't normally attempt to load the hive except when macking system software changes) - try booting to Safe Mode and doing it from there.

I can't see anything obviously wrong there
It looks OK as far as I can tell, and loads OK, so the problem is probably elsewhere - but I have no idea where to start looking

Probably best to start with the fixit from the page here How do I reset Windows Update components? (not the overlay that forces itself on to you!)

started on the fix on the link you suggested but it gets to this command prompt:

    mshtml.dll

Then throws up an error saying that the module was loaded correctly but the entry point dllregisterserver was not found, please make sure mshtml.dll is a valid DLL or OCX file

    That's OK - carry on :)
These errors are to be expected.
