New to Win 7 pro 64 - Serious basic questions

Had this new Dell for about a month - delivered with Win 7 Pro x64 SP1 installed.
1st thing - made a system image disk set - using Dell utility.

2nd - Tried to make a rescue disk - Dell Utility looks for a USB drive greater than 100mg < 3 TB. instered 16 Gig thumb drive - NOPE - wants an eternal HDD! Win 7 utility - error message. ( don't remember it off hand, but I didn't get very far into kicking off the utility. )

3 - Win 7 updates - spent 24 hours downloading and "installing" umpteen updates - Important! Currently I have at least 220 failed update installs sitting in the 'update' window of the whatever utility wants me to download and install more important updates ( which also fail to install).

Current program installs on that machine ( not using it to type this ) are AVG and Firefox. nothing else so far. By the way - Firefox does run without problems ( although I should evidently be using an alternative browser in the near future.. )

I had one instruction to erase the update folder - well can't find an "Update" folder - where the hell does Win 7 store this stuff.? ->Then, do I have to download each one - one at a time, with a reboot each time, only to find out they didn't install?

My account is admin level, and neither I, nor the Administrator, are allowed to see what's in various folders, even though I believe I have system folders as " visible".

If this thing can't accomplish basic stuff, I'm really tempted to install Win XP, get it fully updated to SP3, and run the thing the way I want to.

Need serious advice about Win 7 and definitive help sessions with this Basic Stuff!!
Yes working through tutorials, but a lot revolve around a system that seems to accept updates and allows one to create a freaking Rescue disk.

AND - Yeah I know, XP support ends in April - ( which is a good reason to get the job done NOW) but I don't believe the OS will just roll over and die - unless they coded in a drop dead date in the software ( which means I would have to disable the "clock :) whatever..... ).

One rule of thumb I was taught here was to download updates in small amounts.
Check a few of the smaller ones at a time then when you get to the larger sized downloads grab a few and download.
It may take a little longer but the downloads will go smoother.

Make sure you uncheck the box that wants you to download updates automatically. Take control of your computer.

By the way... Welcome to 7 Forums, fill out your specs, take a look at all the great Tutorials and enjoy your stay here.

Got it about Dec 8th. Dec 9th made disk image, and tried rescue disk. Dec 9th started downloading 'updates' - yes in smaller batches - eventually by issue date to get older ones first, in case they were interdependent. Some took. most didn't. Yes Windows is activated. And NO - no automatic updates, I always use Ask Me for any program out looking for updates.
Where is the "UPdate" 'folder' in Win 7 so I can clear out the failed updates? winsxs?? If so, How do I correlate those 'files' with the information in the 'windows update' screen that shows all the failed downloads?
    Thanks for the replies.

That is a good question, I don't have an answer for you though.

I am going to request this be moved to the updates forum where our experts will see it.

OK, Finally back at it. Downloading the SURT. 435 Megs! really?

C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download - I've got 1 entry - That doesn't correlate with the 220+ failed updates. The surt is finally downloaded, so I'll run that and see what happens!

Wondering if updates fail because they aren't relevant to current OS.
    Back later.

OK Ran SURT - Installed, then installed Hotfix. Pretty quick - is there something more to running SURT?

New updates available - clicked 3 dated 1/14/14, all those failed. What's the point in this M$ B$???? Those 1/14 updates show up again in the "update" download window. flock that.

Do I waste my time doing the next step?? SFC

Ran SFC /verify only - No problems found

CheckSUR contains a LOT of files (I tried extracting it once, and abandoned it when it got to 2.5GB :)) as backups for updates which are known to cause problems (from the error-collecting telemetry that WU sends back) if it finds errors, it attempts to correct them using these files, and logs all errors and correction attempts.

It's mugs like me who then have the fun of finding any other 'missing' files - and interpreting the more complex error messages and attempting to correct them as well.

    CBS.log - can't open ( access denied) : 679k.

Error codes? I would have to find the failed updates and delete them in order to "reinstall" tehn to get the 'error code'. OR (1) I could do screen prints associated with right clicking and viewing details of each failed install. OR (2), I COULd copy and paste them into something ( notepad's all I got now, and summarize each heading and related error code. ) (1) would burn up a LOT of thread space., and (2) That seems like a lot of work.

How about I ignore it ALL, and all future updates, and just load my programs and see what happens. I mean I've got about a month into this just trying to find out why 220 Important security Updates didn't install and still looking at a bare bones system.
