I look at it this way.
Their will be no SP-1 for Windows 7.
Microsoft doesn't want Windows 7 to look or work better. It would take sales away from Windows 8.xx and Windows 9 when it comes out.
Will there be a service pack 2 on CD/dvd for windows 7 sp 1?

This has made my decisions on upgrading to 8.1 or 9 or whatever. I see windows update a waste of time now. With the way the economy is. I don't see people rushing out to by a new operating system or new computer every year. The only way that would work is if the retail operating full install version of Windows 8.2 or 9 cost $50.00 or under. The pro version cost $100.00 or under. Even businesses are strapped.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if EOL for Win9 was reduced to 8 years from the current 10, to further boost adoption speeds. Business will not go for an OS that has to be replaced before most of their machines have been upgraded, so will be encouraged to adopt earlier and more often, if it can be sown that the systems are stable enough.
Business manpower churn is such that retraining is needed anyhow - even if many businesses ignore the fact in the hopes of a trickle-down effect from new users and home users.
The only people who specifically and regularly got training in any of the companies that I worked for were the IT staff themselves. Otherwise if you were lucky, you got a 1/2 day intro course (or maybe an hour's one-one training) when the company introduced new software - but never anything for a new OS, as by that time it was considered old hat, and everyone was supposed to know it anyhow. If you had a decent manager, you could ask for training - and if you had a specific project, you could expect it - but otherwise it was mostly on the Simon-says principle and much time was wasted.
Much of the time, a company's unwillingness to upgrade the OS is because of a critical piece of third-party software, which was expected to work in the new OS - but didn't. This was particularly bad on the change from XP to Vista because of the new paradigms which Vista introduced. Those hurdles have now been largely overcome either by updates, or by moving to new systems completely.
There have been no paradigm-shifts involved since Vista - and I haven't heard of any for Win9. Yes, Win 8 went to a touch-centric interface (badly IMHO) but the background was still Vista with bells on.
What Win9 is going to be like I have no idea yet - but I expect that it may be something like the change from Win2K to XP. A much slicker interface but not a lot of really new stuff. MS has still to deliver on a couple of the promises it made in the Alpha stages of Vista, but they'll want to let the dust settle over the bones of Win8 before delivering anything spectacularly different - which may come with Win 10.
At this point in their move to the BYOD generation, MS will want to consolidate their base, and convert more people to subscription services, rather than anything else - so expect the continuation of that trend to come in the apps and Office 365 areas, rather than in the base OS.
The day of the hobbyist PC user is clearly nearing evening - the days of the device user (complete with bruised thumbs) is approaching noon. The business Desktop machine is slowly being replaced either by laptops or by devices, which may get taken home, while the ones who actually probably need desktops (designers and such) may well soon be working remotely from thin clients anyhow.

Microsoft has made it quite clear that there will be no SP2 for Windows 7 on CD or download. It appears that the article mentioned in post #2 is somewhat outdated.
The production and testing of a new service pack requires a major effort quite apart from that required for the individual updates. If there is any practical way to avoid this Microsoft will do it, as would most other software companies. Windows update and the release of updated OS versions is probably a better alternative at this time.
Of course some third party may produce an unofficial SP2 for Windows 7 but such should be avoided. Aside from the risk of introducing malware or other undesired software the testing is likely to be limited. The dangers would far outweigh the potential benefits.

Yes, this KB Article ID: 2775511 is a little outdated and needs technical explanations about some registry settings before & after applying it.
Refer to post #129 from march 21, 2013, and for refresh packages refer to post: #180 from Jan 03, 2014.
There are hundreds of hotfixes since this roll-up update had been published, and i'm still thinking that is not fair not having SP2 even if i can understand corporations business manners!!

Remember if you are on AT&T and go over your bandwidth you are charged extra for that month, windows update could cause that.
How does apple do their operating releases and same with linux distros? At least you can get those on cds.

Win7 is their best by far. Sadly for MS, it does nothing to get the users where MS want them.
That is what win8 and following are for. They only have one plan, they will keep tweaking it, but it is the same thing,. There is no plan B for MS. They need to leverage their traditional users into their vision of the future. That is future which provides constant revenue streams from user info gathering, targeting, renting software, etc.

There is always hope as new people are running the Windows team and also a new CEO so things could change.
Still running Windows 7 on an old Laptop and wife's desktop. Running Windows 8.1 on my desktop so next clean install for wife will be W 8.1 and Laptop will be replaced soon as it is old and slow and falling apart.
