Windows 7 Service Pack 2 (Kind of)

If you're doing a fresh install of Windows 7 have a read through this article:

No officially announcement yet. The hot fixes may cause problems booting your system according to a poster there. If you chose to do a clean install of windows 7 service pack 1 and want better security, you could just download the hotfix. Doesn't fix all issue. From what I gather it is better to run windows sp 1 with the hotfix then without any updates. If windows 7 uses want a service pack 2 on CD and download. We need to email, snail mail Microsoft to get them to release one. I just bought my system in January.

    Win 7 Service Pack 2

    Hi,

The article was intended to be used as reading material only. Supposedly it's the nearest thing to Service Pack 2 that is available - like an unofficial service pack.

    Personally I use Belarc Advisor

to check for missing hotfixes then do some research before deciding if I want to install them.

As for an actual Service Pack 2 - current information suggests that it won't be released.

Microsoft have long given categorical statements (albeit unofficial) that there will NOT be any Service Pack 2 for Windows 7 - and in fact appear to have completely abandoned the idea of Service Packs for OS's altogether.

    Hi NoelDP,
So, Microsoft is going to release on Operating System ever year? Not everybody wants to buy an Operating system every year and I don't think manufactures & stores would like this either. They said the same thing about Service Pack three for XP. Just my opinion.

There were extenuating circumstances for XP3 in the form of the huge gap between the launches of XP and Vista, and the relatively poor internet availability at the time. Windows 2000 had 5 Service Packs over its General Availability lifetime - one every year, if I recall. MS has since aimed for one after about a year to fix things not found in the Beta testing.
The release of Windows 8.1 this year was MS's replacement for Windows 8 Service Pack 1 and since Windows 9 is expected this year(?) then there's no serious chance of a Win 8.2

I wouldn't be surprised to see the same procedure with Windows 9 - a refresh after about a year, and new release a year later.
This would help MS's money-stream, which is otherwise going to take a sever hit because of the relatively low prices that they can charge for tablet/phone installs.

    Business could actually like it!

MS is actually losing huge amounts of revenue because the hardware churn and software churn are out of phase, with the hardware churn having extended from the 18 months of XP days to 2-3 years now.
Business always takes 3-4 years to adopt a new OS - Win7 is still on the upswing after all!

With a two-year OS cycle, Business could effectively ignore alternate OS releases, while MS gets what is effectively a massive paid-for public Beta as the off-cycle release.
MS then puts the perfected stuff into the Business release next time, and business can adopt it a lot quicker.
MS that way gets a 4-year business cycle, rather than what it a fairly hit/miss supposedly 3-year cycle that often extends to 6 years, and Business can adopt a relatively new OS with confidence that it's been tested to destruction in the real world.

The large Corporations and Government Departments I've worked for tended to have run their business PCs into the ground and resisted changing their official business OS. The reason, cost including retraining and possible disruption to business processes. Their Research laboratories were much more flexible but even then we needed to use the Corporate OS for business communication.
