nothing enlightening there - it's all within what I'd call 'normal' parameters.

I'm really at a loss to work out where to look next for a clue - and tending towards a repair install (which I hate to do after all this work on both our parts!)

Well if the only option is to repair from the installation CD, luckily I do still have the Windows 7 installation disk

I can see one reason (finally) why you're having problems with WIndows Update - your clock is set wrong!
Please check your Region settings, and the date and time..

The do a new Check for updates, and see what appears. Attempt to install only the oldest one, and post back with the error you get, and a new MGADiag report.

    Duh - sorry... wrong thread!

The original disk may not be much use - unless it has SP1 embedded.

See the tutorial here... Repair Install

Everything seems to be running ok now (eg windows update) however I am having a reoccurring problem with random crashes. The screen dies and the hard drive light stays on solid for a good 30s before the system restarts. Ive made a new BSOD thread here: System Event: ID 41 (Computer crashes randomly then reboots)
