    windows updates all missing + ox80073712

    Ok so i have tried to follow the procedure you guys have detailed.

    SURT downloads and installs but update doesnt happen.
    Scannow is not working.
    The only error code detailed is ox80073712 as my update history has now vanished.
    have also tried M/S diagnostics / repair / fix it etc and nothing.

    this is the log file

    You have a registry problem - from your CBS.log ...
    Code:
     Line 19: 2014-03-05 20:20:57, Error                 CSI    00000005@2014/3/5:19:20:57.136 (F) d:\win7sp1_gdr\base\wcp\componentstore\storelayout.cpp(6636): Error STATUS_SXS_COMPONENT_STORE_CORRUPT originated in function ComponentStore::CRawStoreLayout::OpenCanonicalDataKey expression: (null)
     Line 27: 2014-03-05 20:21:02, Error                 CSI    00000007@2014/3/5:19:21:02.160 (F) d:\win7sp1_gdr\base\wcp\componentstore\storelayout.cpp(6636): Error STATUS_SXS_COMPONENT_STORE_CORRUPT originated in function ComponentStore::CRawStoreLayout::OpenCanonicalDataKey expression: (null)
     Line 30: 2014-03-05 20:21:03, Error CBS Failed to initialize store parameters with boot drive: and windows directory: [HRESULT = 0x80073712 - ERROR_SXS_COMPONENT_STORE_CORRUPT]

    I need to have a look at your COMPONENTS registry hive

    Please copy the C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS file (no extension) to your desktop and then compress it - upload the compressed file to your favoured fileshare site (preferably Dropbox or OneDrive) and post a link.

    Sorry, but no cigar :)

    In more detail...
    Open Explorer
    Navigate to the C:\Windows\System32\config folder
    In there you'll find a file called COMPONENTS (no file extension)
    right-click on it and select Copy
    Close Explorer and right-click on a blank area of the desktop - select Paste.
    The file should now appear on the desktop.
    now right-click on the file, and select Send To... - then pick Compressed File
    a new COMPONENTS.zip file should appear on the desktop.
    Upload that to Dropbox, and post a link (you seem to have got that part right! :) )

    From the header, that looks like the right file - but it's effectively empty (it should be about 40MB in size, uncompressed, and 9-12MB compressed)

    At this point, I think your options are limited to a repair install (if it works) or a clean install.

    Before we go that far, though - have you attempted a System Restore?
    Follow the instructions here...

    Noel
    i tried the restore but to no avail as it would only go back a few days which was not far enough .

    so a more radical approach may be next !
    prob is i dont have any discs as the laptop came 2nd hand with win 7 home installed.

    In that case, a repair install is probably indicated - see the instructions here...
    Repair Install
    They include how to download a copy of Windows 7 for the purpose.
