    Windows 7 x64 SP1 Update failure


    Hi all,
    My computer keeps trying to install Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 Update (KB976932) and never succeeds. It has been happening since April 2013 as I see in the update history, each time attempting to install it during shutting down. For a few minutes after computer launch Windows Update downloads updates anew, causing the system to slow down a bit.
    The SP1 does not appear under the system version at Computer properties.

    When installing through Update window, I get the following error:
    Code 80004005 - Windows Update encountered unknown error

    I've run several adviced FixIt applications all in vain, also downloaded the SP1 update manually (with antivirus temporarily switched off) - but that ended up with the very same error.

    There could be many causes for your problem, but one very possible cause is a hard drive that has corrupted segments (beginning to fail). Test your hard drive.

    I think I'd better look at the registry first...

    I need to have a look at your COMPONENTS registry hive

    Please copy the C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS file (no extension) to your desktop and then compress it - upload the compressed file to your favoured fileshare site (preferably Dropbox or OneDrive) and post a link.

    OK - with luck, I've fixed the registry....


    I've uploaded a file - mkoaa.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive
    Please download and save it to your desktop.
    Right-click on the file and select Extract All, and save to the default destination (which should be a folder on the desktop)

    Create a new System Restore point

    Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands.

    REN C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS COMPONENTS.OLD1
    COPY %userprofile%\desktop\mkoaa\COMPONENTS C:\Windows\System32\config

    If you get an error with either command, STOP THERE - do not reboot! - post for instructions.

    Assuming both commands go OK, reboot, and run another CheckSUR scan - post the new CheckSUR.log file.


    While you're doing that, I'll work on the other ordinary file problems :)

    I accidentally cancelled first run of Checksur, but the second one was completed. Hope that won't be troublesome.

    Noel seems to have a good handle on the problem, he is proficient with repairs of this nature.. If his suggestions do or do not work, I suggest that after the problem is corrected you download the free Macrium Reflect and once a week make an image of your hard drive. Put in on an external drive. In the future if this or any other problem happens, you can very easily repair it yourself with the image.

    CheckSUR is now clear, and there don't appear to be any errors in the CBS log.

    Please run another SFC /SCANNOW, and post the new CBS.log (only) - then I'll fix the remaining errors from that.
