    CheckSUR is clear.

The SFC is interesting - it fixed 5 files, but is having problems with one others...

The remaining file is insignificant - it's a common error from a manufacturer's OEM install.

One at least of the fixed errors could be the result of using non-compliant Themes - have you had any such installed?

There's only one outlying error in the CBS background -
    Code:

I can't see that you've rebooted the machine since running the SFC??
Please do so, and post (just) the CBS.log so I can see whether the POQ succeeded or not.

I am running a non-standard windows theme. But that was not installed when Windows Update was failing. Interestingly after reboot the theme has been replaced with a default looking theme.

Anyway, have rebooted. CBS log file attached.

    Thanks

    - although I have to admit that the log is far from exact about it

See if Windows Update works now - just do a Check For Updates, then install only the oldest update found.

I don't know what you did, or how you did it, but you sir are a genius!

    It worked!

I've only installed the oldest update as didn't want to break anything - but I presume I'm ok now to go ahead and install the other updates (except the Bing toolbar...think I'll give that one a miss...).

Thank you for all the time, energy and work you have put into fixing this for me, especially as it is for free. I am really grateful.

    Thank you :)

Great! - you're welcome - go ahead and install the other updates, (preferably no more than 5 at a time, starting from the oldest)

If any fail the first time, do another check for updates, then repeat with the oldest 5 found that time.

All updates installed. No hitches whatsoever.

Thank you again - a great relief! Will mark the thread as solved.
