    Hi,

    I tried this and got an alert telling me that a later version of Skype is already installed.

    In that case, try uninstalling Skype completely.
    Afterwards, reboot, then install a new copy of Skype, and reboot again, then visit Windows Update and do a Scan for Updates - install any found.
    With luck that will kick it into submission :)
