    Windows 7 x64 cannot update, error 80073701, 80070490, 8E5E03FA

Hi, this problem has been nagging me for a while now. I have 31 updates that have not been able to be installed for a year or so now. I've run the Update Readiness Tool to no avail.

I've run sfc/scannow, don't understand all the errors, but most of it has to do with Wordpad. I can't upload CBS.zip, it is 11.3 MB, but I've uploaded sfcdetails.txt, a screenshot of the update errors I'm receiving and a screenshot of some of the updates I cannot install.

I don't understand some of the updates. For example, why is Windows trying to install both IE 10 and 11? And I only have .NET Framework 4.5.1 installed so why is Windows trying to install updates for .NET Framework 3.5?

Here's the critical error from the sfcdetails log -
    Code:
    2014-04-11 12:44:52, Info CSI 00000534 [SR] Repairing 1 components
2014-04-11 12:44:52, Info CSI 00000535 [SR] Beginning Verify and Repair transaction
2014-04-11 12:44:53, Info CSI 00000537 [SR] Cannot repair member file [l:22{11}]"wordpad.exe" of Microsoft-Windows-wordpad, Version = 6.1.7601.17514, pA = PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE_AMD64 (9), Culture neutral, VersionScope = 1 nonSxS, PublicKeyToken = {l:8 b:31bf3856ad364e35}, Type neutral, TypeName neutral, PublicKey neutral in the store, hash mismatch
However, that is very unilkely to have caused the problems with Windows Update.

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data
If the file is too large, delete the older CBSPersist files and try again.

Compress it - it will probably come down to about 1.5MB

It's obviously these errors which are causing your problem.

I'll post a fix for them later (or maybe tomorrow!)

Hmm looking at that list, I need some details first.

Please open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands...

    Code:
    REG LOAD HKLM\COMPONENTS C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS
    REG QUERY HKLM\COMPONENTS\DerivedData\Components\x86_microsoft-windows-minkernelapinamespace_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17932_none_0ca1c10dda240617 >>%userprofile%\desktop\npres.txt
    REG QUERY HKLM\COMPONENTS\DerivedData\Components\amd64_microsoft-windows-i..timezones.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17955_en-us_e1711fab98858d98 >>%userprofile%\desktop\npres.txt
    REG QUERY HKLM\COMPONENTS\DerivedData\Components\wow64_microsoft-windows-wow64_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.17932_none_d088def7226177d5 >>%userprofile%\desktop\npres.txt

    .
This will create a file on your desktop - npres.txt - please upload that to your reply.

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
    1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
    2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.

I hope I did this correctly. I copied all the commands and pasted it in Command Prompt. Seems to me the operations completed, but I hit Enter anyway.

    Yep - perfect :)

Good, that makes my life a little easier, as I was worried that entire Keys may be missing, but it looks like there's only one missing value in each.

Back later/tomorrow - it could take me a while to get things sorted.
