Windows 7 Won't Download or Install Updates of Any Kind
Hi everyone I'm fairly new to the forums as I've been looking for an appropriate place to ask questions regarding Windows 7. As I have been having a single issues with it for several years now.
I've come across a major problem with my main computer. It has been an issue that came up between 2011 and 2012. Windows can no longer Update. It just hangs on "Preparing to Install" and then freezes. Also unable to update definitions for Windows Defender or the Microsoft Security Essentials.
The last successfully downloaded and installed update was: 7/27/2012 - according to Windows Update. Ironically when I click "View Update History" it says that all download attempts since "9/21/2011" have failed. So this seems to be a problem that started quite a long time ago.
When I attempt to update it shows there are 120 updates available to download and install. But that's as far as it goes. As soon as I hit install it just locks up and the progress bar freezes.
Also when attempting to Update Windows I get the notification prompt of: Windows is Downloading Updates (0% Complete) which does not go away unless I force quit the task. Considering it freezes and never goes past zero percent I often I have to do this.
Here is the error I receive:
Code: 80246008 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.
When I purchased the computer it did not come with a Windows 7 disc, mind you. It came loaded with Windows 7 (64 bit) on it already. So I do not have a back Windows 7 CD.
I have no anti-virus currently active and it still won't properly run Windows updates. I have however experimented with many different firewalls over the years including AVG, Norton, Comodo and have uninstalled all. Am curious if perhaps these tools caused the issue to begin with.
The system update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based System (KB94781) for whatever reason is having troubles downloading. Ironically.
