I think a reset of Windows Update is in order...

Crap.
Tried option 3. All appeared well after reboot. 27 updates and 24 optional. Optional were the crappy Bing stuff and language packs. I hid those. Picked one of the oldest updates to try, and I got the same error: 8007371b
