    More problems with error 80073712

Toshiba laptop. Apparently has never downloaded or installed any updates since I got it in August.

Installed the "SURT" download, but is doesn't appear to be running, according to the task manager.

Tried the sfc command and got a message saying "Windows Resource Protection could not perform requested operation."

Update error message and CBS folder attached.

I spent about 30 minutes with a MS tech person. Her suggestion was to upgrade to 8 or 8.1. I asked about upgrading with the ISO file and she admitted that would work. She added they were aware of problems with the CBS.

    Any thoughts???

CheckSUR failed with a nasty error...

The MS Tech seems to be more interested in selling a new license than good practice

The above error would certainly cause the problems with SFC - here's the critical errors from the CBS background...

I need to have alook at your COMPONENTS registry hive

Please copy theC:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS file (no extension) to your desktop andthen compress it - upload the compressed file to your favoured fileshare site(preferably Dropbox or OneDrive) and post a link.

Hi Noel --. The folder is only 8K. New to dropbox - still figuring out to post the link.

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/a5reemppstzs0n6/components maybe????

If the file is only 8KB then you have severe problems! - it should be at least 6MB (usually around 9MB!). Sure, upload it as an attachment here.

How big is the uncompressed COMPONENTS file? (should be min 30MB)

Have you attempted a System Restore back a few days??

8K is what the properties says. I attempted restore when I first became aware of the problem a few months ago. It made no difference.

In that case your only chance is a repair install - see here for instructions.

That was what I was afraid of. I already burnt the ISO onto a DVD. Maybe to be safe I'll get the rest of the drivers - or try to -from the Toshiba site.

I have an HP desktop that also runs Win 7 pro -- I don't suppose there's any chance that copying the component file, or CBS from there and installing on the 'bad' laptop would work?

The COMPONENTS file is part of the registry - it contains most of the data that holds the Windows Updates in place and allows the system to use them. It changes every time an update is installed or uninstalled.
Copying from another machine will almost never work, and can cause even more problems than you're already having.

Believe me - a repair install is fairly painless nowadays, and is by far the quickest and surest way to cure your problems.

OK. Thanks very much for the help and link to the tutorial. I'm not going to attempt this until next week, but I'll let you know the outcome.
