OK - I've got 90% of them sorted, so let's give them a go...
    I've uploaded a file - gshae.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive
    Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)

Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
    Pick that
You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
    At the prompt type
    DIR C:\gshae
hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
    DIR D:\gshae
    or
    DIR E:\gshae

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

    XCOPY <drive>:\gshae <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

    (e.g. XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h )

run the command (it should take almost no time) and when the prompt returns, type
    EXIT
and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt
then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your reply

With luck, we'll only have half-a-dozen remaining to do after this - there's a couple I'm going to be hunting for in the meantime.

This should fix all but two of the errors - which I think we'll need to deal with another way, anyhow...

    I've uploaded a file - gshaf.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive
    Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)

Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
    Pick that
You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
    At the prompt type
    DIR C:\gshaf
hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
    DIR D:\gshaf
    or
    DIR E:\gshaf

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

    XCOPY <drive>:\gshaf <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

Good - that worked as expected.

    All that's left now is...
    Code:
     Line 39364: 2014-08-19 22:10:46, Info CSI 00000325 [SR] Repairing 1 components

The easiest way to deal with this (hopefully) is to uninstall and reinstall the program with which it came - Visual C++ 2008 - Look in the Installed Programs listing and see if you can find it there. If you do, uninstall it, and reboot, then reinstall it using this download...

Download Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86) from Official Microsoft Download Center

    NoelDP,

I've uninstalled and reinstalled as you suggested. After rebooting after the install, I ran legitcheck.hta and it validates a genuine Windows install. I was also able to download and install latest Windows updates. Seems like I'm good to go!

Thanks very much for putting so much time and effort into getting my machine healthy again! I sincerely appreciate it!
