it started when i tried to use a plug and play controller for games on pc, but the drivers wouldn't install and somehow the issue led me to a windows update issue

the surt tool doesn't work and gives me the error code 0x80246002

Thanks - it looks like you've done a lot of the preliminary work!

Here's the summary from the CheckSUR report....
    Code:
    Summary:
    Seconds executed: 769
     Found 18 errors
     Fixed 18 errors
CSI Missing Component Key Total count: 1
Fixed: CSI Missing Component Key. Total count: 1
CSI Missing Pinned Component Key Total count: 1
Fixed: CSI Missing Pinned Component Key. Total count: 1
CSI Missing Identity Total count: 2
Fixed: CSI Missing Identity. Total count: 2
CSI Corrupt Identity Total count: 2
Fixed: CSI Corrupt Identity. Total count: 2
CSI Missing C Mark Total count: 2
Fixed: CSI Missing C Mark. Total count: 2
CSI F Mark Value Wrong Total count: 2
Fixed: CSI F Mark Value Wrong. Total count: 2
CSI F Mark Missing Total count: 9
Fixed: CSI F Mark Missing. Total count: 9
    - so it fixed everything it found!

The background CBS.log data, however is a nightmare

The really strange thing is that I can find no evidence that an SFC scan has been run in the past 4 months!
This is possibly because of the other corruption present.

Some of the errors I'm seeing in the CBS log make me think that you are likely to be having RAM problems.

Please follow the instructions in this tutorial, and post the results.

The other obvious culprit for corruption is the hard drive- see the tutorial here... SeaTools for DOS and Windows - How to Use

    Sorry - busy weekend.
Please run another SFC /SCANNOW, and post the new CBS data.

It will not let me run sfc /scannow or sfc /verifyonly. The data for the CBS hasn't changed but i'll post it anyway

I'm not sure how much I'll be able to do - there are indications of significant errors in the registry (again)

Please run another CheckSUR scan and post the new results,
then I need to have a look at your COMPONENTS registry hive

Please copy the C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS file (no extension) to your desktop and then compress it - upload the compressed file to your favoured fileshare site (preferably Dropbox or OneDrive) and post a link.
