Failure in installing most Windows 7 updates

SORRY FOR THE MESS I CREATED BY ENTERING A RUNNING THREAD. HERE IS THE PROBLEM

    Thank you Tom,
you are running a really marvellous forum and I have recently joined it after seeing what had been going on between grabow & NoelDP. The latter deserves a salute.
My problem is getting the errors:

    Code 80073712
    Code 80070643
    Code 3712
upon running the windows update with failure to install more than 70% of them. Furthermore, upon restarting the computer, it fails to cofigure the installed updates.

    over to you sir,
    Aliya

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data
If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Here's the summary from the CheckSUR...
    Code:
    Summary:
    Seconds executed: 854
     Found 10841 errors
     Fixed 2 errors
CSI C Mark Deployment Missing Total count: 30
CSI Payload File Missing Total count: 10789
Fixed: CSI Payload File Missing. Total count: 1
CBS Watchlist Package Missing Total count: 21
CSI Store Directory Missing Total count: 1
Fixed: CSI Store Directory Missing. Total count: 1
With that number of errors there is no way that we can even start fixing the problem manually.

I have my doubts that a reair install will work, either - but it should be tried before having to resort to a clean install.
See the instructions here... Repair Install

Became confused to use the appropriate step at 'Repair Install'. Adopted Step 4 but could not go beyond downloading the SP 1 ISO at a different partition as I do not have Service Pack 1 installed, something which is demanded upon running the SP1 ISO. Either I am unable to understand the directions properly or there exists some confusion in the set of directions. Anyway Sir, the situation is that I have the Windows 7 Ultimate edition without the Service Pack 1 installed from a retail DVD that I have with me. When I failed to install the updates, I attempted to install the Service Pack from multiple sites, including the Windows official one, but even the Sevice Pack 1 won't install! So here I am with a Windows 7 Ultimate without Service Pack 1 installed on my Dell Inspiron from a retail DVD that I have with me and am unable to install either the Windows Updates or the Service Pack 1. Now guide me which step to follow at the 'Repair Install' guide page. (More dumb than you expected Sir Noel? Ha, ha but we can't change the basics. Am I not right?)

Try using the RTM disk/iso to do the repair install instead of the SP1 disk/iso - it should work
