    Updates installation procedure

For some time now, I don't remember when this started, when there is a slew of updates for Windows, about half of them are installed OK and the rest fail. I then let Windows try again, the updates are downloaded again, and then they install OK. Why do some of these updates fail on the first try?

My laptop, also a Windows 7 sp 1 machine, installs all available updates on the first try.

    Thanks.

I had similar today on this latest pack of updates. God knows why, I think it offered me 15 in all and 5 failed. On rebooting I searched for updates again and the five that failed were offered again. This time they all installed fine. Would be interested to know why this happened as it nearly gave me a coronary!

I install updates in this fashion and it works for me.

Large KB's one at a time and reboot whether it request reboot or not.
Small KB's 4 or 5 at a time and reboot whether it request reboot or not.

When all are installed I check WU again for any more updates.

Sometimes, the install order isn't the correct one - so updates which depend on previous updates being completely installed find that the install is 'pending' and backs out until after a reboot.
Sometimes, the download fails the consistency-check at install, so it backs out and deletes the offending parts.
    ...and sometimes sh1t just happens
