Thanks, but would a repair install mean I'd need to reinstall games & softs?

Nope - they should be unaffected (mishaps apart!)

    Hey NoelDP,

The problem is no longer relevant. I'll explain myself :
Yesterday I uninstalled kaspersky AV (the licence had ended) and tried to install Avast.
Then I had a BSOD during the installation of Avast. I think it was because just after uninstalling KAV, I didn't reboot.
Thing is, Windows wouldn't reboot, even in safe mode. It couldn't repair the boot too. Sfc didn't work, chkdisk saw a lot of errors but it didn't work either after that. Finally I just reinstalled windows (sob, lost all my apps and games!).
Funny thing too, I only saw the W7 I installed was a 32bits distribution so I just ended up downloading W8.1 x64 from my School's Dreamspark.
I'll install it tonight, but, well, normally I shouldn't have any more windows update problems at least!

Thanks a lot for helping me through this though it ended up this way, I appreciated a lot!

    "DANGER, Will Robinson!"
If CHKDSK found a lot of problems, then it's worth running the disk manufacturer's test utility to check that the disk itself isn't failing (or use Seatools for DOS)
SeaTools for DOS and Windows - How to Use

There's no point installing a nice new OS on a failing drive.

But it's a brand new SSD! And when I say a lot of errors it's only because it found a lot of orphan files, i don't know if that's really applicable...

...still worth checking. Somehting like 5% of HDs are DOA - I don't know what the numbers are like for SSDs.

Yep, you're right, I'll check before installing.
