    Heh - alternative method...

Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands..

    REG QUERY HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\gpsvc /S
    REG QUERY HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\FontCache /S

    Post the results...

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
    1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
    2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
    3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

Windows update not working - Solved

I had the normal "Windows Update service not working - You may need to restart your computer" message for some months.
A Windows reinstall did not fix it, nor the latest BIOS, nor running all the automated "Mr Fixit" solutions from Microsoft. The other CMD changes, and changing 'services' to Automatic delay were also done, to no effect.

    But one thing did work.
It seems that the Intel IRST program is somehow involved.
I simply uninstalled INTEL RAPID STORAGE TECHNOLOGY version 12.0 via "programs and Features > uninstall'
The 132 Windows Updates then downloaded as usual.
Reinstalled the latest IRST driver from INTEL. Updates now work as normal. Problem solved.

That works for a very specific error-set - your machine would also have been displaying as non-genuine (assuming you had the WAT update installed, and we could have fixed it quickly, with the right data

It does NOT work for this error-set, so far as I know.

    NoelDP,
I defer to your 13,471 posts, and your obvious expertise.
I hope the following may give you yet further insight into the Windows Update problem.

My PC had online activated Win7 Ultimate 64 when IRST driver 12.0.0 was uninstalled and the very latest v13.xxx installed.
There was no 'non-genuine' display as you surmise.
Control Panel > System showed Windows as activated during the whole time no Windows Updates were available.

Once the IRST driver was removed, the Windows Update page changed, with the Microsoft Update option now shown.
Both Windows Update and Microsoft Updates downloaded while the IRST driver was absent, and continued to function after the latest IRST driver was installed.

I had tried all the publicised fixes over months, without effect.
To now have Windows Update working perfectly, by a simple driver uninstall, is a real relief.
Perhaps it is worth trying in the first instance as a pragmatic fix for the many non-experts with the Win Update problem.

    Cheers from Down Under.

The fact that your system didn't show as non-genuine almost certainly means that the WAT update wasn't installed at the time.

The problem here is a known faulty patch, which has since been withdrawn and will be re-issued when it's been fixed and retested.

Your problem was a driver-set which either repeatedly broke, or wasn't correct in the first place - you can see the effects many times in these forums, in threads such as ...Started getting Windows not Genuine errors after 3 years w/OEM product

..and also elsewhere, such as... Windows Not Genuine error 0x8004fe21

You pasted or did the last command twice!
ImagePath is correct in both keys.
ServiceDll is correct in both keys.
Other settings are not related to a file or path, so I didn't compare.

I think all is just fine! Do you still have any problems?

(My reading of this is the same - conclusion possibly a little different!)

Windows has a nasty habit of describing a 'file not found' error as something else - and this may have happened here.

Please run the following commands in an Elevated Command Prompt, and post the results

    DIR C:\Windows\FntCache.dll /S
    DIR C:\Windows\gpsvc.dll /S

That should list all available copies of both files, wherever found :)
