    Persistent 80070002 error

    Hi,

I've had a persistent problem with my Win7 Updates - can't be solved by regular MS Help procedures. Here's what I've done lately:

    1) Saw error 8007370B (before it was always 80070002)
    2) Downloaded and run SURT (KB 947821)
    3) Installation was complete and successful
    4) Tried SFC sfc /scannow – message: Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.
    5) After doing all this WinUpdate error code changed from initial 8007370B to the regular 80070002
    6) Produced a CBS.zip file as requested in the tips.

I've seen others with a similar problem on this - and other - forums, but I understand it's better to get a personalised diagnosis and support.

Thanks so much for that - whoever might help!

    M.

Here's the summary from your CheckSUR scan...

With that variety of errors present, I'm thinking in terms of a repair install already...

Your CBS.log shows a number of errors of this type...
    Code:
    Line 41679: 2014-09-02 00:06:06, Error                 CSI    00000022@2014/9/1:23:06:06.715 (F) d:\win7sp1_gdr\base\wcp\sil\merged\ntu\ntsystem.cpp(3676): Error STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND originated in function Windows::Rtl::SystemImplementation::DirectRegistryProvider::SysOpenKey expression: (null)

In summary - I think your best option is a repair install

    Thanks Noel,

OK, so I followed your advice and tried a repair install. Like a good boy, followed all the steps from "How to Do a Repair Install to Fix Windows 7"
    . (Followed the 4-7-etc. sequence.)
All works like a charm till the "gathering files, settings, and programs" stage (no compatibility issues). Then, this:

"Setup can't continue. Restart the computer and restart Setup. When prompted, try getting the latest updates"

    Found this:
Error upgrading: Setup can't continue. Restart the computer and restart Setup. When prompted, try getting the latest updates

    And followed this:
Fix a corrupted user profile - Windows Help

All to no avail, still stuck there ("get the latest updates", are we not at point 0 here?)
BTW, I did deactivate MS Security Essentials and Win Firewall. No third-parties anti-virus.

    Any suggestions please?

In that case, you're between a rock and a hard place
The only real option now is a clean install.

Slippery slope, then... Which might indeed lead me to fresh-installing Win7, or just abandoning it completely and running Wine in Ubuntu (same hardware, no problems there) or using a MacBook for any necessary MS apps.
Thanks so much - good to know I just shouldn't waste more time trying to solve it.
Would you be able to imagine any reason why such a mess could occur?

It can be something as simple as a power spike at the wrong time - or a power failure during the post-update reboot - or failing hardware.
About the only thing problems like this is not due to is a problem with the update itself.
