    win7Pro 32 bit KB2971850 (only) update Error 800B0100 (son's laptop)

Have tried the normal things to cure:
    • SURT
    • SFC scan
    • Windows Update Troubleshooter

Plus searched here for other similar, but to no avail.

Have got CBS.zip, but it's too big (>18MB)

Before attempting to chop it down & posting, maybe this might save that work:
Below is the (short) CheckSur.log file.

    Any help appreciated.

    That'll do

    I've uploaded a file - wbgaa.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive
    Please download and save it.
Right-click on the downloaded file, and select Extract all…
Extract to the default location - which will create a new folder wbgaa in the same place.
Open this folder - there should be one folder inside it ( Packages)

Copy the content of the Packages folder to the folder
    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages

Now run the CheckSUR tool again (it may take a while)

Post the new CheckSUR.log file, and the CheckSUR.persist.log file.

...when I run the CheckSUR tool (aka SURT?)

...it says "you want to install hotfix 947821" - yes?

Yep - That's the one. The hotfix doesn't actually 'install' anything, but it uses the Windows Installer to check for the proper existence of a huge number of registry entries and files - and exits silently unless it crashes for some reason.
The log tells us what it found, and what it managed to fix.

The new log shows that it's now fixed the original file problems - but we'll have to work another way to fix the new one which has now appeared.
    Code:
    Checking Component Store
    (f) CSI Payload File Missing 0x00000000 comctl32.dll.mui x86_microsoft.windows.c..-controls.resources_6595b64144ccf1df_5.82.7600.16385_zh-cn_6189e316803d96d4

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.
    At the Command prompt, type
    SFC /SCANNOW
    and hit the Enter key
Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.
Copy the file C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log and the newest CBSPersistxxxxx.cab file to your desktop, and compress the two into a zipfile - then upload that to your reply, and we'll see if that discovers any further problems before we attempt to fix this one

Thanks again for swift & helpful reply.

The SFC /SCANNOW finished with just this:
..."found corrupt files but was unable to fix them"

I rebooted and copied the files to the attached zip as requested.

This matches what CheckSUR found so there shouldn't be much problem replacing the missing file.

I'll post a fix protocol later.

    I've uploaded a file - wgbab.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive
    Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)

Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'
    Pick that
You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
    At the prompt type
    DIR C:\wbgab
hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
    DIR D:\wbgab
    or
    DIR E:\wbgab

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

    XCOPY <drive>:\wgbab <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

    (e.g. XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h )

run the command (it should take almost no time) and when the prompt returns, type
    EXIT
and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt
then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your reply

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
    At the prompt type
    DIR C:\wgbac
hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
    DIR D:\wgbac
    or
    DIR E:\wgbac

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

    XCOPY <drive>:\wgbac <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h
