Windows Update fails on IE 11 & .NET Framework 3.5.1

When attempting to run a Windows Update, I get notifications that 3 updates fail.

I've run the SURT & SFC scan. SFC scan reported: "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

The error/codes copied from the Windows Update window are:

Code 80070057 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

Code 9C48 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

The error/codes copied from Event Viewer System log are:

Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems.

Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070057: Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1 on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 for x64-based Systems (KB2937610).

Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070057: Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1 on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 for x64-based Systems (KB2972211).

    Windows logs are attached.
Thanks in advanced for the assistance! :)

It looks to me as if you had some severe problems back in May this year - which were apparently fixed.
The question is... How did you fix these problems? 'Fixing' them by using a 'registry cleaner' could well produce the type of problem you are currently seeing.

Do you still have any System Restore points from around this time? (Please do NOT attempt to use them, if so - it may create even more problems)

    Please post your C:\Windows\windowsupdate.log file.

    Hi NoelDP,

Unfortunately, I don't recall what may have happened back in May. But I think I may know what could have been the cause.

We're currently running .Net Framework 4.5 & the failing update was for 3.5. Additionally, IE 11 was already installed, so that's probably why that one was failing too.

I simply went into WSUS, moved this workstation to it's own group & unapproved these updates. When I attempted to run Windows Update again, it said that all updates had been applied.

.NET 3.5 is part of Windows 7 and cannot be uninstalled - and still requires updates.

Please post the windowsupdate.log file I requested.

This appears to be the update giving problems...
Download Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1 on Windows 7 Service Pack 1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 from Official Microsoft Download Center - try downloading it and installing from the download. If it fails again, post the error message and the new windowsupdate.log file.

Sorry for the delay. If I don't have a chance to try that today, I should by tomorrow.

Thanks again for all of your help! :)
