Manually installing updates - where to place files?

I do a lot of Win 7 installs, and the update process on a fresh install is a bit painful.

So I downloaded all the current Win 7 updates (roughly 6GB) from the Windows Update Catalog and what I want to do is place them in the proper place (folder) so Windows Update will see them and install them.

Otherwise it looks like I have to install each one separately, which saves on bandwidth usage since there is nothing to download, but still takes a long time which of course partially defeats the purpose.

Hi red, in the future try this:
Slipstream Windows 7 SP1 into a Installation DVD or ISO File

I believe the default location for updates is:
    C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

Not sure about them installing. I'll let someone else comment on that.

I forgot about slip streaming. I did that with XP a long time ago... I will look into it. Thanks.

And then if I understand how Windows Update works, if the new updates are placed in the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder, Update should recognize them and install them accordingly. That would be the ideal situation. Install Win 7, then dump all the updates in that folder and let Windows Update install all the updates.

Chime in (anyone) if I am wrong...

Windows Update will NOT see ordinary update files placed anywhere - you would need to put the files into a WSUS store and force the machine to use WSUS for the necessary updates first, rather than normal WU.

Thanks - I didn't know what WSUS is, so I searched and found:

How to install all downloaded Windows Updates with the wusa.exe?

I downloaded the software and it appears that it will do exactly what I need to do.

That's OK if you're certain that all the updates are required - I don't know what would happen if a not-required update was forced to install this way

Good point - I have a couple spare units with which I can experiment. I will post the results in a few days.

I'd be interested to see the results! - I don't have enough spare time to do that sort of testing myself

I had some time this evening and gave it a shot. I get this console error:

Medium does not support Microsoft Windows <w61 x64 enu>

ERROR: Medium neither supports your Windows or your Office version.

Where do I need to put the updates? Which folder?
